Spicy Chocolate Cookies

When Dick was a young lad, his neighbor Grace Marsh made crinkly chocolate cookies that he LOVED. It took only 50 years but we did find the recipe, and it’s presented below for your baking pleasure.

2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup unsweetened, Dutch processed cocoa

2 tsp. cream of tartar

1 tap baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

2 cups sugar

2 large eggs

2 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp chili powder

Preheat over to 400F. Mix dry ingredients up to and including salt in a bowl. Cream 1¾ sugar with butter until very fluffy. Add eggs and beat to combine. Reduce speed and add dry ingredients just until combined.

In a small bowl mix remaining sugar, cinnamon and chili. Form dough into balls and roll in the sugar mixture. Place on baking sheets, 3” apart, and bake 10 minutes. Let cook on the sheets about 5 minutes.
